Tournament Recap

In a year where there was no clear favorite heading into the weekend, the parity amongst the teams was obvious. Every one of the 8 teams was able to pick up a win, with none of them having a goal differential of minus 5 goals. The four semi-finalists, The Ajax/Pickering Raiders, Barrie Colts, York Simcoe Express and Halton Hurricanes all claimed a spot in the OHL CUP next week. The Halton Hurricanes were named 2025 OMHA Champions after beating the York Simcoe Express 6-4 in the finals. Halton lost their first two games of the weekend but they got the help they needed to squeeze into the semi-finals, where they handled the Ajax Pickering Raiders with ease securing a 6-2 victory. Halton was led by top prospect goaltender Cole Vreugdenhil, who played all 5 games and was a consistent performer throughout the weekend. Aleksandr Sementsov, Alex Taylor and Colton D’Amico led the way offensively for the Hurricanes contributing 52% of their team's offence. Halton looks to use this momentum heading into the OHL Cup Championship.

OMHA Championship Final Recap: Halton Hurricanes 6, York Simcoe Express 4

In an intense OMHA Championship final, the Halton Hurricanes claimed the OMHA title with a 6-4 victory over the York Simcoe Express in a fast-paced, high-scoring battle.

The action started early, with York Simcoe striking first when Logan Crump and Nathan Cloutier connected to put the Express on the board. However, Halton quickly answered less than a minute later, as Halton #1 defenceman Colton D’Amico capitalized to even the score at 1-1.

York Simcoe regained the lead on the power play as Benjamin Veitch, Logan McAulay, and Brayden Blyth connected for a go-ahead goal. But once again, the Hurricanes responded, tying the game with Evan Berrigan getting in on the action in the last 30 seconds of the period.

The 2nd period was much of the same, with Nathan Cloutier from YSE scoring early, but Halton answered back with 2 quick goals in a 24 second span with goals from Alex Taylor and Joshua Pinchak. Much like the first period, the trailing team scored a late goal tying things back up, leading to an exciting third period.

With the championship on the line, Halton broke through early in the third when Alex Taylor netted the game-winner off setups from Sementsov and Pinchak, giving the Hurricanes a 5-4 advantage. York Simcoe pulled their goalie in the final minute, but Jacob Scarpelli sealed the win with an unassisted empty-net goal at 00:34, securing the 6-4 victory for Halton.

With their relentless offense and key defensive plays, the Halton Hurricanes captured the OMHA championship in a game filled with momentum swings and clutch performances. Aleksandr Sementsov (3 assists) and Joshua Pinchak (1 goal / 3 assists) led the way, while Alex Taylor’s late heroics made the difference.

A thrilling final capped off an unforgettable OMHA season, as Halton lifted the trophy and cemented their place as OMHA champions!
